Chapter 23

“Nothing at all,” a frustrated Chad Summers said three hours later. “No guns, no ammo, no ninja swords, and the closest thing to a ninja costume we found are some black socks.

“I know Todd had a bunch of guns at one time,” Weber said. “I wonder what happened to them.”

“Last I heard, he stored them with Matt Wells over at the sporting goods store after that drone thing,” Dolan Reed said.

Weber looked around the house. The walls are covered with a mixture of NASCAR memorabilia and the stuffed heads of half-dozen big game animals. The only reading material they found in the house was a stack of gun magazines in the master bathroom. A flat screen TV that was almost as wide as Todd Norton was tall was mounted on one wall. A stack of DVDs were on a small stand below the television. Weber sorted through them. There were several Best of NASCAR type videos, a couple of shoot ‘em up, bang-bang action-adventure ones, but nothing at all related to ninjas. He wasn't ready to let go of the idea that Todd Norton might be responsible for the attacks on Doug Mullins, but there was nothing here to indicate his suspicions were justified.

"Okay, I guess this was a waste of time. We tried."

"So, what now, Jimmy?"

"I don't know, Buz. I guess we just keep plugging away at it. Sooner or later this ninja is going to turn up somewhere."

As if on cue, Deputy Archer Wingate's voice came over the radio. "Uhhh, Dispatch, I just passed someone dressed like a ninja driving a white car. I made a U-turn and I'm following them."

"Do you have a license plate yet?" the dispatcher asked.

Archer read off an Arizona license plate number and the dispatcher told him to stand by while she ran a check for wants or warrants.

Weber keyed his portable radio and asked, "Where are you, Archer?"

"I'm right behind the car, Sheriff."

Ignoring the laughter from the three deputies with him, Weber keyed the microphone again. "I met, where are you located?"

"Uh, right here in town, Jimmy."

Trying to remain patient, Weber said, "I know it's not a big town, Archer, but I really don't have time to drive up and down every street looking for you. Could you maybe give me some clue to exactly where you are in town?"

"Oh, yeah. I'm on Main Street in front of the bank."

The dispatcher came back to say that the vehicle was a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander registered to somebody named Halima Fayad, with an address in Tempe, Arizona. There were no outstanding warrants showing for the vehicle or its registered owner.

“Stay behind them, I’m on the way,” Weber ordered Archer. “Lock this place up, guys, while I go see what he’s dug up.”

It took less than three minutes to get to Main Street, where he quickly found Archer following the white car and it’s two occupants.

Weber picked up the microphone clipped to his dashboard and said, “Light them up, Archer.”
